The eighth edition of Shining Dimensions took place on Friday July 19 with a round robin show. The premise of a round robin is that the performers set up around the edges of the space and the audience is located in the middle. There is no headliner, no support, and rather than focusing on one performer for a whole set the performance passes from one edge of the room to another, round and round, song by song, piece by piece, the creation shifting around the audience. The round robin concept was pioneered by USA musician Dan Deacon (who’s organized whole tours based around the concept) and was introduced to Asia by Seoul based concert organizers Supercolorsuper.

This was the first time somebody has done a round robin in Beijing (to the best of our knowledge) and in keeping with the vibes and energy of the previous Shining Dimensions shows we added a couple of twists in there; while the room was divided into four sections each containing a different musical artist, each area also contained a visual artist who worked on found objects sourced from the constantly shifting hutongs to create a mini scene that started off the performance in muted colors but slowly came to life with pens and paintbrushes. There was also a dance performance/combination improvsation in the intermission.

For this event we went full on with the line up, including some returning faces and some artists we’d been longing to work with since we started the series. The evening featured music by Lastboss all the way from Zhuhai, Dan Rothwell, 4 Channels Club, thruoutin, and Nico & Rudi. The visual artists included James Sserwadda, Chandoso, Shui Wong, and Nan Guazi, and dancing by Duna.

当晚的特色音乐来自Lastboss, Dan Rothwell, 4 Channels Club, thruoutin, and Nico & Rudi。

Volume 9: International Cassette Store Day

When: 2019年10月13号

Where: Aotu Space, Beijing, China

Who: Guiguisuisui鬼鬼祟祟, Wen Liang 杨文亮, Nan Guazi南瓜子, Shui Wong, Emily Wong 黄睿明, Xindi Chen 陈欣頔

After a successful run of weekly Friday night concerts and a summer break Shining Dimension returned for its ninth edition on Sunday October 13. The return show was themed around the legacy of the cassette tape, an outdated yet beloved medium which is celebrated across the world each October. Cassette Store Day sees labels, artists, and fans come together in celebration of the quant medium, which has a lot of history in China (more on that below).
The installation piece and the celebration of dakou打口 culture functioned as common thematic point for both the performers and audience. In terms of sounds there were two artists indebted to the tape medium; audio visual husband and wife duo Guiguisuisui, recently returned from a 20 date European tour, giving their first Beijing performance since the summer; also joining was prolific performer and composer Wen Liang, a seasoned curator of ambient textures and soundscapes. For visuals Chinese Tagtool pioneers Nan Guazi and Shui Wong paired up again, continuing the flowing improvised illustration sessions from previous Shining Dimensions editions, with projecting mapping by audio visual artist ver_1015e. In terms of dance and movement contact improv specialist Emily Wong returned, bringing with her a new comer to the SD fold, Xindi Chen.
Of course it wouldn’t have been a CSD event if they weren’t cassettes for sale, so there were tapes and players on sale courtesy of Beijing’s Nugget Records, Jingweir, Daftpop Sounds (including international collaborations and a new apparel releases) and more.

Volume 10: Inner Visions

When: November 22, 2019 9pm

Where: Aotu Space, Beijing, China

Who: Daniel Rothwell , Alphabetes, Guiguisuisui. , Jukka Ahonen, Anthony Tao , Liane Halton, David Moser ,Monique van Zyl , Brendan McCumstie

Shining Dimensions is a new event series curated

The tenth volume of Shining Dimensions will take place on Friday November 22, under the theme of “inner visions” curated in collaboration with Daniel Rothwell. This what Daniel had to say about the evening:” If we consider art as the ‘organisation of sensorial stimuli in time and space’ then we’ve got the third and fourth dimensions covered, but how can we tap into the fifth? In short, the fifth dimension can be interpreted as a higher plane of thought and existence, perceived through deep introspection. The fifth dimension is essentially our inner vision.Using an audiovisual combination of binaural beats, chakra frequencies, and closed-eye visualations, we hope to induce a state of hypnagogia through the Ganzfeld effect, resulting in a shared fifth-dimensional narrative. ‘That sounds great!’ You might be thinking, ‘But what does any of that actually mean?’

Binaural Beats: Auditory illusions that occur when you hear different frequencies in each ear.

Chakra: The centres of spiritual power in the human body.

Chakra Frequencies: The harmonic resonance of the seven chakras.

Hypnagogia: The transitional state from wakefulness to sleep, AKA “Threshold Consciousness.

”Ganzfeld Effect: The amplification of “neural noise” causing hallucinatory effects.

Ganzfeld goggles, or ‘Ping-pong-balls-cut-in-half’ will be provided, and full immersion is not compulsory. It’s going to get pretty trippy up in there.”

To help you along on this journey of transcendence the evening with begin with a more in-depth explanation of the origins and process behind this truly experimental experience through a bilingual presentation by Daniel Rothwell and Alphabetes. With accompanying animated visuals and soundscaping by Guiguisuisui. The voyage will then go deeper with beats and frequencies and visual stimuli by Daniel Rothwell and Jukka Ahonen. Then to bring us out of this dream state there will be a poetry/music crossover by Anthony Tao and Liane Halton, with David Moser on jazz piano. Also included in the evening will be an visual installation in a the adjacent galley space by Monique van Zyl and Brendan McCumstie that will play the concept of Plato’s “Cave of Shadows”, which will function as an alternate for anyone who finds the transcendent journey a bit too heavy.
